Abstinence Verses "Safe Sex"

I'll be adding a link soon relating to the research relating to Abstinence verses "Safe Sex" programs, yet for now, I'll just give you this one.

In my opinion, the main problem is not in the presence of teaching about methods of Birth Control, but in what is emphasized. Remember that Teens are greatly influenced by the messages that they receive about sex in school. Too often Abstinence is downplayed, whether than stressed, while sexual activity and condom use are encouraged. The idea that Children are going to have sex is assumed, whether than challenged. Surveys consistently show that parents want schools to include strong abstinence messages, not just a brief mention of it as an option.

Abstinence education does more than just tell teens to say no to unwed sex. It teaches young people the practical skills they need to maintain their purity. They are taught about Self-esteem, self-control, decision-making, goal-setting, character education and communication skills. Please do read the link and I'll be back with more soon.

You're absolutely right, Lista. If you go to the last post I did on Sarah Palin, you'll find a liberal named Brian there who believes abstinence education does no good. Honestly, these people really do frustrate me! Oh well... I guess it's all in a day's work. Work without pay at that! LOL!

Yeh, it's so frustrating and what's even more frustrating is that no matter what the issue, if it is political, than there is research supporting both sides. BB actually left a link in the comment section on one of the below posts supporting the "Safe Sex" program and I haven't done the research yet that I need to do in order to counter him, though I do know that research supporting Abstinence programs does exists because I've seen it.

It's just like the issue of Abortion and Breast Cancer. There is research that says there's a link and research that says that there isn't.

A group of people who study research collected a bunch of the available research and analyzed it, applying high standards as to what was good quality research and what was not and they found problems with the research that supported no connection, yet most of the research that supported the connection passed the test.

Unfortunately, all it takes in order for those who want to deny the connection and keep this issue in the "controversial mode" is for them to keep repeating their faulty research results and this is listened too, whether there are problems in the research or not.

You are absolutely right about that, and that is exactly what is so frustrating. there is also the fact that there are so many dimwits out there who will believe anything they read regardless of who writes it. *sigh*

I saw your comment over at Roxies and wanted to tell you I once had a beautiful female german shephard named Shasta. She was a wonderful dog. She's been deceased for a long time now but I'm happy to report she died of old age.

Well, of course. If it supports what one already believes, than who cares whether or not it's accurate, good research? lol.

Here I thought that Shasta was sort of a unique name and yet since we've picked it, I run across 3 others with that name. Wouldn't you know it. Oh well. We like it anyway.

I'm not sure what anyone's personal experience was in school, but when I had sex-ed in school (over 20 years ago) it was very comprehensive, with an entire section on birth control, and abstinence was shown as the BEST 100% effective way to stay protected physically and emotionally.

I would be surprised if there are many teachers out there "promoting" sex by explaining how birth control works... I have personally never met one...
Parents need to partner with educators to get the best message across... the final decision rests with the kids and inevitably a few are going to make foolish choices.

Well said Lista, you are absolutely right, and this is one of the wonderful things that Sarah Palin herself stands for. She is an excellent role model for the conservative party. A proud social conservative who carried her Down's syndrome baby instead of aborting it. And that’s why we had barely had her on our ticket for 12 hours before the democrats started to attack her. They call that Jealousy, and Fear.
Stay well.

Rachael,
It sounds like you were exposed to a really good balanced sex education program. I wish they were all like that, yet I'm afraid they are not.

Bob,
Yeh, the Democrats are jealous and afraid alright and so hypocritical as well. They accuse Sarah Polin of not spending enough time with her Down's Syndrome baby, yet they would abort/kill such a baby without giving it any thought and they stand for woman's rights in the work place and yet think that Sarah Polin should stay home and raise her kids. Just how hypocritical is that?!!

Dems 'jealous, afraid, hypocritical"? Not about Palin, but 4 more years of the last 8 years. Scares me. When Palin has been subjected to half of what H. Clinton endured, we'll see. :)
Hard to keep politics out of sex
ed these days *sigh*...

Sarah Palin appears pretty tough to me. I really don't expect her to drop out. I'd be extremely surprised if she did.

What scares you about the last 8 years, BB? Be more specific.

Well, if the schools are not willing to listen to what parents want, than it becomes political. McCain has a plan to give more choice to the parents in relation to education. Maybe that will take care of the problem.
