Impressive Support to Fire Fighters

I feel as if I should write another short note about the fires up here in Northern California. A friend of mine was telling me about this one church in our community that was feeding the fire fighters three meals a day and allowing them to sleep in their building. They could not believe the amount of support that was being donated by various different individuals and businesses in the community. Apparently, there was one room just filled with food and supplies to the point in which "it looked like a Wal-Mart". One lady even showed up and was giving some of them massages.

The fire fighters were amazed and some of them said that they had never before received such good treatment. So often they just sleep out in the brush, on the dirt, and eat rations supplied to them by the government.

Our community was really neat, though. Some of the residents that live along the main highways posted signs in front of their houses thanking the fire fighters. I don't know how they could have missed the fact that they were appreciated and loved. I don't think that the ones who came from the bigger cities are used to such treatment.

just another example of city life vs rural life. in the city it is expected of them. in the rural areas it is appreciated.

I'm sure they aren't, Lista.

We live on a farm and our house caught on fire about six years ago. It was pretty bad. The entire roof and ceiling had to be replaced and a lot of damage was done due to water. Thank goodness for good insurance! The fire itself was hot enough but the oudoor temperature was at 104 degrees even before the fire. They saved our house! We sent a donation and a thank-you card to the all-volunteer fire department. How many people in big cities even think of doing that? I doubt there are many.

Hi you guys,
In our area, fire is a very scary thing because there are limited routes out of town. Fortunately, the homes that were lost were on the outskirts of town. If the fire ever burned its way through the center of town, there would probably be a considerable number of casualties. They try to do their evacuations in an orderly manner, but I wonder sometimes if everyone would actually get out if the fire ever really got bad.

During the first evacuation that they did, it took a friend of mine two hours to get out of town. The leaders say that they made the mistake of trying to evacuate too large of an area at a time, yet what if the speed at which they could get people out of town was not fast enough.

The residents in our area know this and it contributes to a considerable fear of fire and a greater appreciation of those who fight the fires. Well, yeh, it probably contributes to some panic as well. We really aren't supposed to evacuate until told to do so, but I'm not sure that everyone is as obedient to this idea as they should be.

Apparently, the fires in our area have brought our evacuation problems to Arnold Schwarzenegger's attention and we might actually be getting some state funds to help improve some of our evacuation routes out of town. Well, it's about time. Praise God!!

That would be a big help, Lista. Praise God indeed! :)

We were just talking about the fire to one of the fire fighters and they do appear to be getting a handle on it, yet he explained to us about the difference between a ground fire and a "crown fire". A crown fire is one that has reached the top of the trees. Such a fire is extremely hot, moves quickly across the top of the forest and is extremely hard to control.

The idea is too keep the heat down and keep the fire down on the ground. This is why the helicopters are constantly pouring water over the fire. This does not put the fire out, but it does keep the heat down so that the fire does not climb to the top of the trees.
