Still Here, While Sleeping Giant Creeps

Well, this blog has become more like a personal blog lately about all the frustration and stress of someone who is experiencing the Northern California Fires. I didn't mean for it to become that. At first, this blog was more Political and then, as it progressed, it became more Spiritual, and then more recently, there has been so many things going on in my life that I can't seem to write about much other than the fire.

My goal is to get back into the Political, as soon as life stops stressing me, but I have no idea when that's going to be. If you are interested in something other than what I am writing about at the moment, please don't go away, just check on my labels on the right and go to a subject you're more interested in.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like they are going to be getting a handle on this fire any time soon. The fire just sits there quietly, not doing much because the wind has been still, yet all it would take is another strong wind like we had that one night and the fire would be up in our town in no time.

It's just like I said in the last post when I wrote the words, "Just Yesterday, things seemed to be winding down.", which in relation to that post, was July 7, so we went and picked up our travel trailer, that we had left at a friend's house, just in case we needed to use it, if and when we were evacuated, unpacked it of all the things we had packed in it a couple weeks prior, while meanwhile, a bunch of the fire fighters actually left the area because there were other fires that were considered higher priorities.

Well, besides the heat wave, that was somewhat expected, we also got low humidity and high winds, that were not expected. We're talking 45 mph winds and that is very high for this area. These 45 mph winds, over night, blew a fire that was not even really that close to us over a rather large area (fortunately uninhabited forest) all the way over to our back door, while at the same time, blowing the fire that was close to us over the fire break that the fire fighters thought would hold when they left our area. Over night, we went from feeling secure enough to unpack our trailer and vehicles, to a Precautionary Evacuation Notice that required us to pack up again.

The fire maps have been showing a fire that is huge and not that far away. It is only the absence of any strong winds that is causing this fire to slowly creep towards us at a non-threatening speed, but I'll never forget the words of a Mayor of one of the effected towns. He said that "This fire is like a Sleeping Giant." and that "Anyone who has made the decision to get out of town has made a wise decision."

Basically, what I get out of these words is that the fire is currently "Sleeping", only because there have not been any strong winds, yet if the incident that occurred with the 45 mph winds repeated itself, this "Sleeping Giant" could very easily rush up into our town in no time.

These were the words that I was thinking of last night, when I was strongly urging my husband that maybe it would be wise to evacuate and we probably would have, except for the fact that we will be taking someone more elderly with us that does not handle these things as well as we do, so the decision is to put off evacuation until they make it mandatory and perhaps, if we are extremely lucky, this trial will pass without us having to evacuate at all.

In response to "Hi BB.
Where've you been?" I was away from cyberspace for two weeks. We
drove to Wisconsin, our origin and where core family lives. Thankfully, no evacuations from fires, but people still looking for their homes underwater..Mom
Nature is an equal opportunity employer, huh? Idaho has its share of forest fires, although
usually in late summer: often these are remote and affect few of our sparse population. Last year
a few burned on until the Fall snows. In your area, it sounds as if quite a bunch of you are living in a state of 'pre-evacuation', trying enough for a day or two,
very stressful when it drags on and on. What with fire, mudslides
and earthquakes, California seems
always battling the elements: I'd consider evacuating to Tahiti or
Iceland! Hang in there. :)

Hi BB,
Was some of your Wisconsin family involved in the floods?

In the 13 years that we've lived here, I have never seen anything like this. I guess one of the things I was thinking about when we were considering whether or not to evacuate is that I was wondering just how long we were going to have to live in our rather small travel trailer with an elderly man who doesn't handle that sort of thing well; days, weeks, more than a month? And I'm talking, even if our house never does burn down.

Gee! We decided to stay put for now.

The first street in our town that they put on "Precautionary Evacuation" has remained in that state for at least 2 weeks now. Perhaps if that street becomes Mandatory, we might consider evacuation again.

If only God would dump some of that Wisconsin flood water over our fires, we would have it made. Good idea about evacuating to Iceland, yet maybe we'd get caught up in an avalanche. You think?

Thanks for your comment. We may have to cancel the trip we are planning to Canada this year. I don't really think we want to be on vacation, wondering if our house is going to be here when we get back.

Ditto lista. Over here when the weather gets real hot people open up the fire hydrants to cool off which I could never understand, how it's illegal to park too close to a hydrant but people never get told you can't use them as showers, point being water is such a precious commodity and natural resource and to be wasting it this way when people like yourself are really suffering so that's my rant.

Z-man,
In relation to your "Ditto", I must of made some comment about the possibility of water shortage. I don't remember anymore what I said or on what page I said it, but water shortage very well could be our next problem. All the lakes and reservoirs are already low and it is not yet the end of the summer. Oh well.

BB,
Mudslides and earthquakes are more of a Southern California Problem.

Hi Lista. I hope no news is good news. What little TV I watched the last 2 days made no mention of the Calif fires. You and yours have my prayers.

Yes, actually, they are starting to get a handle on it, at least in our area, yet there are still fires burning in other parts of the North State. I don't keep up as much on all of the fires.

At present, the fire that we are personally threatened by is moving in a different direction, threatening a different community other than ours. They actually reduced some of the Mandatory Evacuation areas, back to Precautionary, giving some of the Evacuees the chance to go back home if they wish, but to still remain on alert. Our Precautionary status hasn't changed.

Thanks for your prayers. I've got more posts to do sometime this evening, in order to bring you a little more news as it relates to us.
